Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano

Botti

Lorenzo the Magnificent was the customer of the Villa, which was built – according to the project of Giuliano da Sangallo – on the side of the Albano mountain in a wide rural estate within Florence, Prato and Pistoia, in a wonderful position. The Villa reproduces the humanistic architecture inspired by the ancient style: it soars on a portico, with all its sides open on the garden and the surrounding area. Its construction started in 1485, but it stopped when Lorenzo died, in 1492. According to Pope Leone X, Lorenzo’s son, the works started again and were finished in the second half of the XVI century. The hall Leone X was wonderfully decorated by Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo, Franciabigio and Alessandro Allori with allegorical frescoes which celebrate De Medici Family. Address: just 7 Km far from Signa, Piazza de Medici 14, 59016 Poggio a Caiano (PO).

Villa di Bellosguardo "Caruso"

Botti

The sixteenth-century Villa di Bellosguardo owes its name to its extraordinary position, just over the hills of Ponte a Signa. At the end of the XVIII century it was bought by the Campi family and in 1906 by the famous tenor Enrico Caruso. One of Enrico’s biographers said that he decided to buy the Villa after he and his sweetheart Ada Giacchetti were stuck by the wonderful view and by the monumental and gorgeous park during a walk. According to Caruso’s desires, the architect Vittorio Sabatini made the body of the two buildings symmetrical and he employed the inhabitants of Lastra in the works, who gave the tenor a stone column which is still visible as a sign of gratitude for raising the local economy. Tourists who come for the first time to Villa Bellosguardo are stuck by its majesty and especially by the charm that the park provokes. The abbot Alessandro Pucci commissioned Niccolò Tribolo to build the parterre in the “Italian garden” style, embellishing it with citrus and trees. Both the parterre and the park are now the main subjects of an artistic and botanic tour.

Sculptures and colonnades frame the lemon plants and the hedges which design was reorganized by the Count De Micheli. There is a fountain with typical play of water in the middle of the garden, just in front of the big entrance arch. Recently, the Botanic Library enriched these areas proposing a tour – which is still in the design stage – first of all dedicated to the cultivation of the fine camellias of the Vivai Molendi. The park represents one of the most important parts of this monumental estate because up to now it preserves great part of its sixteenth-century structure with rank flora and sculpture evidences.

La Visitazione del Pontormo

Botti

The most famous work of the S. Michele church in Carmignano is the Visitation of Jacopo Carrucci, called Pontormo (1494-1555), who painted it in the 1520s on commission of the Pinadori family. Maria – who is pregnant – goes to visit St. Elizabeth who is expecting her first son John the Baptist. For the New Testament iconography this visit represents the first public recognition of Jesus Christ. Pontormo deviates from the tradition which tended to emphasize the warmest and most intimate aspects of the event, trying to catch the sense of mystery which enfolds these two formidable motherhoods and the anxiety for the acceptance of a superior will.

Botti

The atmosphere of waiting and the confidence for an extraordinary destiny for the two sons are portrayed by the painter with perfect coherency between the setting in an unreal place and the disposition of the figures, made purposely in order to realize the contact of the two wombs, among the astonishment of the handmaids. The exceptional nature of the event is emphasized by the size of the two bodies which cover almost the whole space, by the luminous light that enfolds them making the range of rare and iridescent colours shine, by the limpid clearness of the two women’s faces, by the sway of the drapery which rise as it had its own life. You will discover yourself in front of a symbolic work of the first Florentine mannerism, which on its own was able to get into the tradition of an artistic age of great interest.

Botti

The Leonardo da Vinci Museum is one of the greatest collection of machines and models of the inventor, technologist and engineer Leonardo da Vinci. Each model is presented and described with specific references to the sketches and the notes of the artist. Now the Leonardo da Vinci Museum wants to be recognizes as a place where the experience of Leonardo and the Renaissance style are greatly substantiated to the public and the reconstruction and exhibition of the models and experiments of the documents of that age – reviewed and interpreted according to historical researches and technical proofs – are constantly developed and modernized and presented according to several communicative modalities.
